North (Uttar) direction in Vastu
The North is the zone of Kubera, the lord of wealth, and of Mercury. It is linked to money, opportunities and career. Vastu keeps it light and open: entrances, living rooms, balconies, study and underground water, with heavy tanks, staircases and kitchens kept away.

- Pooja room
North-East (Ishanya) is the most sacred zone, ideal for prayer.
- Living room / hall
This zone welcomes light and positive energy for family time.
- Study room / home office

An entrance from this direction welcomes positive energy and opportunities.
- Balcony / sit-out
An open balcony here lets in morning light and fresh air.
- Underground water tank / borewell
Underground water in this zone is traditionally auspicious.

Heavy storage here blocks the flow of energy. South-West is best for storage.
- Staircase
A staircase here puts weight on a zone that should stay light. South, West or South-West are better.
- Overhead water tank
A heavy tank here is traditionally not advised. South-West is best.
- Septic tank
A septic tank here is traditionally not advised. North-West is best.
