South-East (Agneya) direction in Vastu
The South-East, or Agneya, is the fire zone, ruled by Agni. It is the traditional place for the kitchen and for electrical equipment. Water and sleep clash with fire, so Vastu keeps toilets, bedrooms and water tanks out of this zone.

What suits the South-East
- Kitchen
South-East is the fire zone (Agni), the traditional place for cooking.
Acceptable here (minor defect)
- Living room / hall
This zone welcomes light and positive energy for family time.
- Dining room
This zone is not ideal for dining. West is traditionally best.
- Store room
Heavy storage here blocks the flow of energy. South-West is best for storage.
- Staircase
A staircase here puts weight on a zone that should stay light. South, West or South-West are better.
- Main entrance
An entrance from this direction is traditionally considered challenging.
- Balcony / sit-out
Openness in this zone is traditionally less favourable.
What to avoid in the South-East
- Master bedroom
This zone is not suited to the main bedroom. South-West is ideal.
- Bedroom
Sleeping in this zone is traditionally linked to restlessness. West, South or North-West are better.
- Kids' bedroom
This zone is not ideal for children. West or North-West are better.
- Guest bedroom
This zone is not ideal for a guest room. North-West is best.
- Toilet / bathroom
A toilet here is traditionally linked to loss of health or savings. North-West or West are better.
- Pooja room
Prayer in this zone is not recommended. North-East is ideal.
- Study room / home office
This zone can make focus harder. East, North or North-East are better.
- Overhead water tank
A heavy tank here is traditionally not advised. South-West is best.
- Underground water tank / borewell
Underground water here is traditionally not advised. North-East is best.
- Septic tank
A septic tank here is traditionally not advised. North-West is best.
